Interior Designing and Individuals With Special Needs

Interior Design is a creative art form that involves visual communication and analysis to identify and determine faults in a space or structure. Interior Designers usually do these:. Identify and measure a space or area. Decide on and bid on projects. Analyze the customer’s objectives and needs for the project to plan the design and make the best use of the space.

Designers often specialize in one or a few of these disciplines. They are experts in communication, research and analysis, as well as the ability to work with others in the profession. Interior designers often work in conjunction with architects, who often have specialized training in construction, building and environmental issues.

There are a number of fields to choose from if you want to become an interior designer. You can become an Interior Design Manager, a Planning Manager, or even a Procurement Manager if you have a formal training and certification in construction science, horticulture, landscaping, industrial design, hospitality or recreation. You can work in private firms, public agencies and museums. Some designers specialize by focusing on residential projects, while others may focus on large-scale commercial projects like office buildings. In order to qualify for a career in Interior Design, you must earn a four-year bachelor’s degree or higher, have at least a master’s degree and a year of relevant experience.

Interior designers must study the principles of architecture, drawing, lighting, textiles, and wall and ceiling treatments. The most popular materials for furniture include wood, metal, glass and porcelain. An interior designer must have a good eye for color, textures and finishes. An interior designer must know how to plan and design space, making accurate measurements and using appropriate software tools. They will often be required to build a variety of spaces, including a home kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, foyer, stairs, outdoor spaces, and indoor spaces such as a living room, bedroom or office.

In order to get into the field of Interior Design, an interior designer must enroll in an accredited school that has a full load of requirements. Some schools require that an interior designer pass a final exam in addition to taking classes in drafting, design, textiles and construction science. The schools that are accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) are those that receive a letter of accreditation from one of the five regional accreditation boards. A fourth-party organization also requires that the interior designer take an exam and pass a third examination before getting a license to practice. Candidates who successfully meet all these requirements should then take a practice exam given by the American Council for Construction Education.

Many individuals may not have special needs when it comes to becoming an Interior Designer. However, there are many opportunities to develop special skills in areas such as building maintenance, electrical safety and emergency procedures, and plumbing and HVAC. Those with special needs are advised to research the field and find a school that specializes in their specific needs.
